Beethoven was born on December 16, 1770 in Bonn. He was the son of the Rhineland singer Johann van Beethoven and his wife Magdelena Keverich. His grandfather Lodewijk van Beethoven came from Mechelen and settled in Bonn. This family origin explains the use of the Dutch word 'van' in his name. It is known that Beethoven was afflicted with an illness of the ear in 1801, which resulted in his being completely deaf by the year 1818. This did not stop him from continuing his composing and directing. He is considered one of the most famous composers of all times. Beethoven died on March 26, 1827 in Vienna at the age of 56.
He composed 9 symphonies, 32 sonatas for the piano, 33 variations on a waltz of Anton Diabelli for piano solo, a great number of short piano pieces and a lot of concerts and sonatas for the piano and violoncello.
